DIESEL TUNERS & PERFORMANCE WORKSHOPS

A common question we are asked by potential and existing customers is whether both a lockup kit and an engine or transmission tune is required, and what are the benefits of each?

Diesel engine tuning workshops offer ECU tuning/remapping services and, for some vehicle models, transmission tunes.

MM4X4 lockup kits are fully compatible with engine and transmission tunes and will maximise fuel savings, temperature protection, engine braking and responsiveness across all driving conditions.

By not modifying the ECU, our kits have the advantage of being able to be turned off, hence returning the vehicle back to normal.

Engine Tunes

An engine tune simply provides more power which is useful when towing. All of our kits integrate smoothly with engine tunes as they do not reprogram the ECU. lockup-mate®PLUS+ for the Toyotas comes with a Dyno Mode to assist your tuner.

Transmission Tunes

In Toyotas, a transmission tune will improve the transmission performance by changing both the lockup and gear shift points but only at higher speeds. Transmission tunes have limitations. They do not lockup at lower speeds, in 2nd and 3rd gears or in 4WD low-range, or when coasting. The ability to lockup at low speed is essential for protecting the transmission from over-heating when climbing long hills, mountain ranges, and when in off-road conditions such as very steep hills or sand driving. A MM4X4 lockup kit keeps the torque converter locked during coasting, hence it provides improved engine braking and direct-drive responsiveness (ie, manual gearbox-like performance). A transmission tune is not required, but our lockup kits will safely compliment one to maximise transmission performance.

Mitsubishi auto-mate/auto-matePRO

Our auto-matePRO and auto-mate kits for Mitsubishis are like a transmission remap and lockup kit all-in-one, and have the advantage that they do not reprogram the ECU. Transmission tunes are not available for Mitsubishi vehicles. Considerations

A transmission tune modifies the ECU and is permanent. As MM4X4 lockup kits do not modify the ECU, they can easily be added to a vehicle which already has an engine or transmission tune without further modifications to the ECU. A lockup kit changes when the transmission is locked and will improve the transmission's performance across ALL driving conditions (highway, slow speed and low-range 4WD).
