lockup-mate®MX is a premium torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup kit designed specifically for the Isuzu D-MAX/ MU-X and Mazda BT50.
It uses digital communication with the vehicle ECUs via the CANBus making it the most intelligent lockup kit available.

Safelock® Clutch Protection​
SafeLock® protects the torque converter clutch from excessive wear to give maximum life expectancy and reliability. Using the information obtained via the digital interface with the vehicle ECUs, it prevents activating the clutch during high slip conditions and only engages when within the same low slip limits the factory ECU uses. SafeLock® also ensures smooth transmission operation with no clunks or shift shock. Emergency Brake unlock feature hands control of the solenoid back to the factory computer ensures there is no interference with vehicle safety systems like Stability Control, Traction Control and ABS.

​Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) solenoid control
The electrical control of the solenoid uses the same PWM signal and engagement profile as the factory ECU to prevent damage to the solenoid (burnout).

Load Sensitivity
The Isuzu is the only transmission we’ve found which will lose full lockup under load and slip the clutch. Load sensitivity is a critical feature of our kit to prevent clutch wear. With the Isuzu, a simple speed (KPH) based ON/OFF design risks clutch slip, even at 80-90 KPH. Lockup-mate®MX will automatically unlock under certain load conditions to protect the transmission from damage.
No Error Codes
When Isuzu transmission throws an error code the result is a very nasty clunk. lockup-mate®MX stays within the transmission’s acceptable performance limits to avoid error codes, so it will lockup in high range 3rd-6th gears, and will avoid lockup in 2nd and 4L and when full lockup is unsuitable for this vehicle.
Advanced Digital Control
Using advanced microcomputer control and digital CANBus communications with the vehicle's computers, it works in harmony with the factory computers for maximum smoothness, to avoid error codes and prevent damage to the transmission. Flex-lockup mode of the transmission is still supported for maximum fuel savings.
OBD2 Gauge PIDs
lockup-mate®MX is like any other ECU on the CANBus so we’ve included the ability for your aftermarket OBD2 Gauge (eg UltraGaugeMX, ScanGauge 2/3, Car Scanner App) to read vehicle information from the lockup-mate®MX computer. Information available to display is lockup status, transmission temperature, load/pedal % (even with cruise control on), steering wheel angle, and actual gear.

Why Install a Torque Converter Lockup Kit?
The benefits of locking the TCC in the transmission are widely known, especially when experiencing heavy load conditions such as towing (caravan, boat or horse float), climbing long steep-hills, or when driving in soft sand.
A torque converter is a fluid coupling between the engine and gearbox. When the torque converter is unlocked, the fluid allows slippage, results in excessive heat buildup, and uses more fuel. Heat is the No. 1 cause of automatic transmissions problems.
Modern transmissions include a lockup clutch to stop slippage and save fuel.
lockup-mate®MX electronically changes when the lockup clutch is activated. No mechanical changes are required to the transmission, and no reprogramming of the transmission or engine ECU is needed.
With a lockup-mate®MX you get:
- Reduced transmission temperatures to help protect the transmission oil from over-heating
- Maximum downhill engine braking
- Enhanced drivability and responsiveness - ‘feels’ like a manual transmission with direct drive to the wheels. When locked the engine power goes directly to the road.
- Less RPM flaring
- Extra information to display on your OBD2 Gauge
When enabled by the driver using the LED/switch, lockup-mate®MX AUTOMATICALLY:
- activates the lockup clutch when the conditions are right; and disables it under conditions that would put excessive stress on the transmission, cause error codes, or when extra torque is necessary to accelerate at low RPM (for better driveability).
- adjusts for low or high range 4WD, and DRIVE or MANUAL modes of the transmission.
For optimum results, all the driver is required to do is ensure the current transmission gear and RPM are suitable for lockup to occur, which can be achieved using MANUAL mode of the transmission or when in DRIVE by encouraging a gear downshift using the pedal.

Advanced Digital Control
lockup-mate®MX uses a micro-computer to communicate using the digital CANBus (via the OBD2 connector) to read important vehicle parameters and provide intelligent control. Parameters include the accelerator pedal position, speed, RPM, current gear, 4WD mode, Drive or Manual mode, factory TCC lockup status, slip, load, and even headlight status. The micro-computer at the heart of lockup-mate®MX uses all this information to ensure the torque converter is locked whenever possible whilst maintaining great drivability and maximising lockup benefits.

Separate lockup algorithms for DRIVE, MANUAL (4H)
The PWM signal to the lockup solenoid is controlled by the micro-computer and mimics the factory computer for smooth activation and reliability.
CAUTION: Beware of lockup kits that just switch a 12V signal to the solenoid as this can damage the solenoid.
When in MANUAL mode, the Slip Alert feature will flash the LED after 5 seconds of torque converter slip (when unlocked) as an alert to change to a lower gear to regain lockup.
No-one likes a bright LED in their eyes during the night, so lockup-mate® MX monitors the headlight status so when they are switched on the LED automatically dims. This can be over-ridden when driving in daylight with your headlights on by simply holding the LED/switch down for 5 seconds to toggle this mode.

Works in Harmony
lockup-mate® MX works in harmony with the factory transmission’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to use the standard flex-lockup and full-lockup modes, and it will also take over full-lockup control when required.
No error codes as it stays within the transmissions computer’s acceptable performance limits.
With its advanced micro-computer controlled intelligence and constant communication with the ECU, lockup-mate®MX exchanges control of the TCC back and forth with the transmission ECU. Essentially, lockup-mate®MX and the ECU are collaboratively working together to control the TCC.
If the ECU then wants to unlock due to coasting, lockup-mate®MX will step in and over-ride it to keep the TCC locked for maximum engine braking.
lockup-mate®MX will light the LED so the driver knows when the lockup clutch is activated. The LED is located on the A-Pillar so it can be easily seen whilst driving.

SafeLock® Clutch Protection
Exclusive to MM4X4 is SafeLock® which has features to protect the transmission from potential damage.
Our kits will only lockup when it’s suitable and (most importantly) will unlock to avoid nasty effects such as shift shock, excessive clutch slip/wear, turbo surging or excessive load.
SafeLock® also immediately unlocks the TCC under emergency braking conditions to reduce possible impact damage to the driveline, and to ensure there is no interference with the vehicle safety systems (eg, stability control and ABS).
lockup-mate®MX is load sensitive. A simplistic speed ON/OFF based lockup kit strategy does not work for the Isuzu transmission as there are conditions, even at 80-90 KPH, where the clutch can slip under certain load conditions.



OBD2 Interface
A feature of our kit is the inclusion of an OBD2 Gauge interface. This provides PIDs so the gauge (eg ScanGauge, UltraGauge, CarScanner) can be programmed to query information from the lockup kit computer.
lockup-mate®MX is just like any other ECU communicating on the vehicle’s CANBus. We have also included a VCI to convert information from other vehicle ECUs into a format the OBD2 Gauge can display.
Currently supported parameters which can be queried from lockup-mate®MX are:

Lockup status – when in full lockup or not.

Pedal position (%) – which also displays the equivalent % when using cruise control

Transmission Temperature (both Pan and Torque Converter sensors)

Actual gear (useful when in DRIVE)

Steering wheel angle – (either raw angle or simplified). Useful when reversing the van or sand driving (where are my wheels pointing?)
